This past week we decided to try our hand at a fun food experiment and we created our own homemade rock candy recipe!
Rock candy (also called rock sugar) is a type of candy that is formed by allowing a supersaturated solution of sugar and water to crystallize on a surface such as a string or stick. Rock candy can come in assorted colors and flavors, and are the perfect choice for a gift basket, a birthday party or a special treat for the kids (and the kid at heart).

Homemade Rock Candy Recipe
Materials and Equipment
- Stove Top
- Large Pot
- Pot Holders
- Mixing Spoon
- Wooden skewers (be sure to cut the pointed tips off if needed.)
- Mason Jars
- Clothes Pins
- Granulate White Sugar
- Food Coloring
- Measuring tool
(Optional: 1/2 tsp – 1 tsp Natural flavor extracts like vanilla, lemon, orange, etc.)
- 3 Parts Sugar to 1 Part Water
(Note: We used pint mason jars which hold 2 cups of liquid each. You will only need 1 cup of water for each pint jar because once you add the sugar the liquid volume will double.)
- Soak skewers in water for 5 minutes.
- Pour a small amount of sugar on a plate and roll the wet wooden skewers in the sugar to coat.
- Set the skewers aside to dry.
- In your large pot, bring water to a soft rolling boil on the stove top. (Remember, your liquid volume will double so be sure you have enough room in your pot.) Add sugar, one cup at a time and stir slowly with your mixing spoon until the sugar has completely dissolved. Repeat until all your sugar has been added. The mixture will double in volume and be very sticky.
- Let the solution come back to a rolling boil then remove the water/sugar solution from the heat. Let the mixture set for 15 minutes to cool.
- Add food coloring to the mason jars. (I suggested to my children adding six drops per jar. Drops quickly became squirts, so I have no idea how much food coloring we added. Obviously orange and yellow had a lot of color added. lol!) (Optional: Add any flavoring extract you want at this time too!)
- After the water/sugar solution has cooled, carefully pour the hot solution into the mason jars. Caution: Be extremely careful when pouring the sugar-water solution; it is hot and sticky, and will burn if spilled on your skin.
- Move the jars with the water/sugar solution to a place where they can be left undisturbed for one week.
- Gently lower the wooden skewers into the solution in the jars keeping all the skewers as close to the center of the jar as possible and not allowing them to touch the bottom of the jar. You want your rock candy to have room to grow.
- Attach a clothes pin to the skewer just above the rim of the jar to hold your skewer in place.
After one week….
It’s time to remove your rock candy!!!
If crystals form on the top of the solution, gently break the crystals with a toothpick.
Carefully remove the skewers. You may need to wiggle them slightly if they’re stuck to the bottom of the jar.
Your finished rock candy!
Don’t forget to break away any crystals that formed on the sides and bottom of the jar to use as a topping for cupcakes or to just eat as-is.
