With summer upon us, families everywhere are looking for ways to spruce up and makeover what seems to be our nation's favorite entertainment location, the home backyard. As outdoor living spaces have become more popular over the years, especially those with a firepit or firepit, the need for a comfortable area to sit and relax has never been more desired. But you don’t need to pour your life’s savings into your backyard to create the perfect space for outdoor entertaining from season to season. Here are our tips for creating a seasonal outdoor living space with firepit on a budget, not matter how big or small your yard is.

Create a Seasonal Outdoor Living Space with Firepit on a Budget
Like many others who live in Southern California, we have a relatively small backyard. We have one patio just outside our house with a small area of grass and greenery before we butt up to the houses next to and behind us. Even though our outdoor living area is what you find in typical suburban So Cal, I wasn't going to let that deter me in creating a living area where we can comfortably entertain family and friends.
The first step to creating a seasonal outdoor space is finding one element that will be a central gathering point for guests. When choosing a piece that will be the anchor to your space, consider purchasing an item that is neutral in color so the piece will last even year after year even if your style and seasons changes. By purchasing a color neutral focal point, you open up the window of opportunity to mix and match colors and patterns from season to season with fun elements like rugs, pillows, accessories, and more. As seasons and styles changes, you can update and refresh your outdoor space with new accent pillows and accessories, an inexpensive and affordable alternative to purchasing a new furniture set each year.
For our anchor piece, we chose the Montauk Dark Brown 5-Piece Patio Sectional Set with Firepit as the focal point for our outdoor living space. Featuring a table, ottoman, right-arm 2-seater, corner chair, and armless 1-seater, this sectional has enough room for our family of six while not overwhelming our small patio.
The dark brown, UV-protected, all-weather synthetic wicker adds a touch of rustic charm, while the rust-resistant powder-coated aluminum frame is designed to last. Best of all, this all-weather outdoor sectional comes with quick-dry foam-fill cushions featuring moisture-repellent polyester fabric covers which are perfect for those living in coastal communities like we do, who are regularly hit with foggy and overcast mornings.
What excited us, and of course the kids, the most about this set is the FREE firepit with screen lit and fire poker that comes with the sectional. Yes, I said free! There is nothing more budget friendly than free, which is part of the reason why we loved this sectional set from Lamps Plus.
Not only can we enjoy a relaxing night by the soft glow of a warming fire, now our kids and their friends can have smores at home anytime they want. And trust me when I say, your kids will LOVE being able to make smores in the comfort of their own home.
Our #1 Tip for Seasonal Decorating on a Budget – Accessorize!
Now that you've chosen your outdoor furniture it's time to accessorize. (My favorite part of a make-over!) This is the time when you can bring in your favorite colors to create a seasonal outdoor living space that really reflects your style. Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone while accessorizing either. Accessorizing is supposed to be fun and fresh!
The first accessories we added to our sectional were these bright and summery outdoor pillows. The Cervantes Green-Blue Floral 22″ Square Indoor-Outdoor Pillow and the Teal Blue and White Chevron 18″ Square Throw Pillow pair perfectly mixing two of my personal favorite patterns, paisley and chevron. You could also add a fun throw (or two) in complimenting colors, as well as lumbar pillows and fun art print pillows.
By using simple accessories like pillows and throws, you can create a new look any time of year for little to no money. You can even recycle accessories from year to year to create new looks your family will love.
To soften the look of hard building outlines like walls and windows, try hanging outdoor curtains or hanging a nice piece of weather resistant outdoor art. Depending on your patio, a fun and festive outdoor rug and hanging outdoor lights would complete any new outdoor living space nicely. Rugs and hanging lights are two more accessories that are inexpensive to change from season to season.
Aahhhh….now it's time to sit back and relax by the fire. The best part of this outdoor living space makeover is sitting back and enjoying the beautiful space you just created.
And smores. Any time is a good time for smores. Just ask our kids.
