Have you ever thought about starting a business from home? Working from home has many advantages, and is a great way to be able to stay at home with the kids without giving up the income that a “regular” job provides. The best part about working for yourself? It doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg to get started! Here are our favorite 5 businesses to start from home for under $100.
5 Businesses to Start From Home for Under $100
Key to Success With Business
This isn’t 100% foolproof, but being passionate about the type of business you’re starting is going to increase your chances of success. You can get into a business that’s lucrative but you don’t really love, but what’s the fun in that? Finding something you’re passionate about is what will drive you through those first few months before the profits start rolling in.
Looking at the different options for starting your business from home, think about the skills you already have or can easily obtain. When you’re bootstrapping a new business, the last thing you want to do is spend hours and hours on a learning curve. Getting into an industry you already know and love is ideal.
Star a Driving Business
If you have a newer car that’s good on gas mileage, and you have extra time on your hands, start driving for Uber or Lyft! You get to make your own schedule and choose whether you take the rides that pop up on your phone. You can drive for both without it being a conflict of interest, and the tips aren’t half bad. Even if you don’t live in a big city, you could stay pretty busy with Uber and Lyft. Not only could the money you make fund another business, you’ll get to meet all kinds of people. You never know who you’ll end up networking with.
The best Uber and Lyft drivers get familiar with their city, so they aren’t having to rely on GPS 100%. Get better ratings by playing neutral music (like Classical), and having chargers available for riders’ devices.
Bonus: Really like driving? You could start your own courier business, or be a courier for Amazon! Another idea would be to offer to deliver groceries to folks in a 55+ community. Some stores already offer delivery but if you live in a smaller town, chances are they don’t.
Get Involved in Direct Sales
Many direct sales companies offer sign-up bonuses or sales from time to time. Pair that with the fact that you most likely know at least ten people in direct sales that might give a discount if you sign up with them, and you’re definitely under the $100 threshold. Before joining a direct sales company, do plenty of research. Some might call me a skeptic, but I always search the company name plus the term “scam” to find the good, the bad, and the ugly about a company before taking steps to join them.
Some people love direct sales, while others have tried many different companies and failed miserably time and time again. It takes a certain type of personality to do well with direct sales, and you have to be passionate about the product. If you can’t stand behind the product 100%, you probably won’t do well selling it. If you can’t recruit others to sign up under you, you probably won’t make as much money. There are exceptions, but most direct sales companies are built like a pyramid: the ones at the top make the most money. Build your “team” to make more.
While doing your research, you might find that direct sales is not for you, and that’s okay, too. It’s better to find out sooner rather than later!
Start a Tutoring Business
If you’re skilled in any subject, you can be a tutor! Some families can’t afford a licensed tutor, so they hire friends to tutor their children. Math and foreign languages can be especially tough for parents to help their teens with, so if you can specialize in one of those you’ll be golden!
Start up costs for a tutor is minimal. You can go all out and create a website, get business cards printed, and put a magnet on your car to advertise your services… all for less than $100! If you’re strapped for cash, you can start a Facebook group for free and advertise in local buy/sell/trade groups. You could even offer tutoring sessions via Skype!
Bonus: Even if you aren’t academically inclined, you could teach music lessons!
Become a Freelancer
Freelancing is a hugely popular business to start from home option right now! Though freelancing has been popular behind the scenes for a while, it’s become more well-known, in part, because of Pinterest. Bloggers (like me!), writers, social media gurus, and other online marketers can all be put under the umbrella of freelancing.
Start up as a freelancer can be literally $0. While you can pay to take courses and training, you don’t have to. You can create a website, but it’s not a necessity at first.

Start a Babysitting Business
Love kids, or pets? Starting a babysitting or pet sitting business doesn’t cost much to get started. There are licensing requirements in some areas, especially after your business starts to grow, but you can start it as a side hustle to see if you really want to stick with it. Make a list of 20 friends with kids or pets (or both!). Reach out to them via email, text message, or even on Facebook. Offer your services and a discount for first-time customers. You can even create a website or Facebook group once you realize whether you want to make it into a full-time business or not.
If you have experience with a certain age group of kids (like preschool), or a certain type of dog training, you can charge even more for your specialized services.
Bonus: Start a house sitting business if you don’t like pets or kids. 😉

Are you ready to get started?
As always, check your local and state laws before starting any business. You may need a business license right away, and your community may have rules against running a business out of your home.
