Every boy goes through it, and for parents opening up the line of communication about puberty can be difficult. When it comes to the question of how and when to talk to boys about puberty we turned to our friend, Old Spice Guy Isaiah Mustafa, who shared his tips on talking about puberty with your teen. Check out the number one rule on talking puberty Isaiah learned over the years, and check out a few of his favorite last minute stocking stuffers for guys.
Talking Puberty Tips with Isaiah Mustafa
My twins are going to kill me for this, but they've hit puberty. Yes, it's true. It all started about two years ago when they began smelling after little league. I'll never forget the day when I brought home a few of their friends after a grueling game in the hot sun and my car stank for an entire week. Yes. An entire week!
Like many boys, discussing puberty with our kids is a sensitive topic, especially when the talk comes from mom. I remember when my oldest said, ‘Mom, why am I the only boy going through this?' You're not sweetie. Your just the first in our family.
According to Isaiah, opening up the dialog is the first and most important thing you can do to help your teen. Be open to conversation and be willing to engage in it. The earlier you start talking about it, the easier it will be to keep have that conversation as they get older.
And about that hair, the one rule Isaiah learned was that if you start growing hair just let it grow. No matter what region it's growing in, let it grow. There's no need to shave or trim until it gets out of control.
Boys do need to learn though, the hair under the arms is going to hold onto bacteria which is when they want to begin using deodorant. Isaiah suggests waiting on antiperspirant because antiperspirants tend to be thicker and some boys don't like the texture.
Isaiah's top three things to remember when talking puberty with your teen:
- Whatever is happening, it's okay. Everyone goes through it.
- Keep the lines of communication open.
- When all else fails, schoolofswagger.com
And, Isaiah wants to remind parents everywhere to always check the School of Swagger video series for additional help and information in fun settings kids will love.
