The Toshiba Classic Golf Tournament is returning to Southern California for another thrilling tournament and a weekend full of family-friendly activities, and we couldn't be more excited. This golf tournament will be a first for our children, and, since this tournament is packed with family-friendly activities including games and giveaway at the Blue Shield Hoag Health Village and the second annual Student Day on Sunday, March 11th, I know our kids will develop a new love for the game where every player plays against par.
But there is so much more to this tournament than family-friendly fun. The Championship weekend returns it Orange County for its 23rd year with a new slate of programs designed to enhance spectator experiences. The powerful tour line up will be competing for the 1.8 million purse and marks the Hoag Hospital's 20th anniversary as the host, manager, and beneficiary of the tournament, which generates more than $1 million annually for charities including the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center.
The Toshiba Classic Golf Tournament not only brings players with more than 400 worldwide professional victories and over 50 major championships to Southern California but has also hosted 40 PGA Tour Champions members in the World Golf Hall of Fame, many of whom are still actively competing today.
So Cal's Toshiba Classic Golf Tournament
The Toshiba Classic Golf Tournament is the largest and most exciting event in Orange County. Held at the Newport Beach Country Club, the event takes place this year March 7th-11th.
The private, 6,600 yard, par 71 course was built in 1953 by world-renowned William “Billy” Bell and is known for its challenging water holes and mature trees with narrow kikuya fairways lined with bold stands of aged pine trees. The golf course reflects the grand Newport Beach heritage with its bold stand of pine trees, impeccably manicured greens and fairways, and picture-postcard views of the sparkling blue Pacific and the Newport Bay.
The Classic Pro-AM begins on March 7th with both professionals and amateurs competing before leading up to the first round of professional competition on March 9th. Championship weekend kicks off March 10th, with the third annual Military Appreciation Day presented by Microsemi, where all active and retired service members and up to three guests will receive complimentary admission plus food and beverage vouchers.
On Sunday, March 11th, from 10am-4pm, the Toshiba Classic will host their second annual Student Day, with a complimentary entry for students under the age of 18. The First Tee’s local chapter will highlight The Kids Fun Zone, which runs from 10 am – 4 pm, with even more family-friendly golf-themed activities including a putting contest for chances to win scholarships, golf equipment, tickets to local attractions, and more.
A SNAG Driving Range will teach the fundamentals of golf to even the most inexperienced golfer. Obstacle courses, life-sized tic-tac-toe, and a putting zone will be run by First Tee Staff and volunteers. A crafts station will give kids the opportunity to make signs cheering on their favorite players as well as other arts and crafts. Strike a pose at the photo booth and share your photos using the hashtag #kidsFOREtheclassic. With the help of the First Tee, they hope to provide a fun and safe atmosphere for the whole family to enjoy.
And for the seniors, don't miss Blue Shield of California's Tournament Attractions at the Blue Shield Hoag Health Village where seniors can kick back and comfortably enjoy the views on hole 9, from Blue Shield's exclusive ‘Senior Section'.
This is the same location where families can stop by to get their portrait taken and learn more about health-related topics including Hoag's specialty centers, institutes, and partners.
Lastly, fans of all ages can take a moment to rest and recharge under shaded bleachers at the 18th green, provided by Blue Shield of California.
